IN THIS LESSON

Welcome back to Module 5! In this playful lesson, you and your child will learn how to “paint” feelings with music—translating joy, sadness, excitement and calm into improvised melodies, rhythms and soundscapes. By giving emotions a sonic “color,” kids gain language-free tools for self-expression while deepening empathy for others.

Key Points:

  • Emotion–Sound Mapping: Tempo, pitch and dynamics can mirror the energy of different feelings (e.g., fast high notes for excitement, slow low notes for calm).

  • Self-Awareness & Vocabulary: Naming a feeling before & after improvising helps children link internal states with descriptive words, boosting emotional literacy.

  • Empathy Through Listening: Taking turns performing and interpreting one another’s “emotion songs” trains active listening and perspective-taking.

  • Creative Risk-Taking: Free improvisation encourages flexible thinking and confidence—there are no wrong notes when you’re painting feelings!

Set up a “sound studio” with homemade instruments or simple household objects, choose an emotion card, and let the music flow. Pause to discuss: “How did that sound make your body feel?” Repeat daily to build a rich palette of musical strategies for managing moods.
